Right product, right place, right rice, right time. I was taught this concept in school and it seems to (finally) have real world application for real world designer duo Susanne Ostwald and Ingvar Helgason based out of London, England. Having struggled to make a name for their brand for many seasons, they have finally broken into the American market, which at first seemed too intimidating to penetrate. As of late, the brand has zeroed in on whom they are marketing to (Americans!) and for what price point (accessible instead of designer). One thing Ostwald Helgason has never wavered on is the product. This season’s presentation at Milk Studios features the loveliest assortment of brocades, tweeds, and prints. Their design aesthetic is most definitely a buttoned up school boy styled for women. The school boy collection is intermingled with true touches of femininity in the form of stunning brocade mini dresses and bold printed pencil skirts. They remain on trend with their color blocked dress in rich oxblood and navy while also featuring a graphic sweater, which is also a huge trend for the upcoming season. The Ostwald Helgason look is very Hitchcock girl meets London school boy and I cannot get enough of it! Which brings me to my next question: when will it be available locally?

  2. CALLA F/W 2013

For being so young, Calla Haynes certainly has an impressive resume.  The 31 year-old Toronto native began her design career at Parsons in New York, however she would never actually graduate from the acclaimed design school.  Instead, she accepted an internship with Oliver Theyskens and quickly packed her bags and relocated to Paris.  Ever since, Calla has been working on her designs while never really having the means to put on a hyper-expensive Paris fashion show.  This year she got the opportunity to use MILK Studios during NYFW to present her collection (for about one fifth of the Paris production costs).  Calla is best known for her emphasis on fabric.  Not only does she design her own prints and patterns, but she is also extremely hands on with the creation of her knits.  Her collection features the brightest fuchsias, purples, yellows, and blues in perfectly constructed tweed jackets and skirts.  She uses the brightest of floral prints for her pants and sweaters and has no shame in emblazoning said sweatshirts with her label -CALLA – right across the chest.  And even though she describes herself as a bit of a tomboy, her clothes seem to land right between super-femme and overly masculine.

Here we see emerald (Pantone’s color of the year) popping up in the most fashionable of ways.  My favorite being the color blocked emerald/tangerine heels.

Two words: Fur. Hats. Need I say more? Except, where can I get my own!

Prints and patterns also reign supreme this season.  And may I say that the patterned jumpsuits paired with a super structured jacket really make a statement!  Although the classic tailored pant and powder blue dress are lovely as well.

Once again, black and white prevails outside the tents.  However, being expressed in many ways: Glam goth-lite, polka dots, and more.

It’s that special time of year again, and I’m not talking about V-Day. I’m talking about New York Fashion Week.  And while we absolutely adore the fantasy that takes place inside the tents, there is much to be said about those in attendance.

Black and white proves to be a dominant trend both inside and outside of the tents and yet it is being expressed in many different ways: Color blocked leather, graphic dresses and even a simple black and white pant suit all with a pop of color from their handbags to complete the look.

Fur is also making a comeback this season with everything from fur vests to full fledged sheepdog jackets. We can also see 90s grunge continue to hang around the fashion crowd with their sweaters tied around waists and the mixing of bold, graphic prints. The look with the trench and tiger tee screams Leandra Medine! (We totally adore her!)

And finally we see lots and lots of color: Bright white wide legged trousers paired with bold fushia, purple harem pants and of course Pantone’s color of the year: emerald green awesomeness. Nicely played ladies!

    Photos by Brawlio Elias.

We took the time to check out Australian-born Mauricio Alpizar’s latest collection in New York. His latest inspiration: the small winged Sakata insect. His designs are made for the sophisticated women, with an emphasis of making his garments simple enough for women to wear.
